What is Service Line coverage for homeowners?

To start, what is a service line? A service line is an underground utility line that goes into your home. This can include lines like

  • Water and sewer lines
  • Power lines
  • Gas lines
  • Cable lines

Service Line coverage is additional protection that can help protect you and your home due to failure of a service line.

How does Service Line coverage work?

Typically, your home insurance doesn't cover service line failures. However, if a service line fails due to a covered cause of loss, Service Line coverage can help pay for the cost of repairs or replacement.

This coverage is subject to

  • Coverage limit: $12,000
  • Deductible (per occurrence): $500

This can also include repair or replacement with

  • Environmentally friendly materials
  • Excavation costs
  • Expediting expenses
  • Coverage for outdoor property

Why do I need Service Line coverage?

Service Line coverage can help provide extra protection to you and your home. Like most insurance, Service Line coverage is designed to help in the case of the unexpected.

When deciding if this coverage is right for you, you may want to ask yourself

  • Considering that all service lines will eventually fail, how many service lines are connected to my home, and how old are they?
  • Given that typical service line losses can exceed $7,000, can I afford to cover such costs out of pocket?

If you still have questions, we're here to help get you the coverage you need.

What is covered under Service Line coverage?

Covered causes of loss include, but are not limited to

  • Wear and tear
  • Rust and corrosion
  • Mechanical breakdown
  • Freezing or frost heave
  • Tree or other root invasion

Note: A covered service line must be

  • Owned by the insured
  • Or the insured must be responsible for its repair or replacement as required by law, regulation, or service agreement

A covered service line ends at the precise location where the insured's responsibility for such repair or replacement ends. In no event will a covered service line extend beyond the point of connection to the main service or utility.

What is not covered under Service Line coverage?

Examples of lines not covered include, but are not limited to

  • Septic systems (service lines to the septic systems are covered)
  • On-site wells (service lines to the on-site wells are covered)
  • Service lines past the connection point to the main service or utility
